Health Benefits

Habits learned as a child are often carried through to adulthood. Regular participation in gymnastics can teach kids how to live a healthy lifestyle, and remain involved in the sport as they grow up. Additionally, moderate and vigorous physical activity in kids can significantly reduce the risks of obesity, heart disease and diabetes in adulthood.

Social & Emotional Benefits

At SGA, kids have fun, meet new friends, work within a team and learn independence. Gymnastics can also help equip kids with skills to better handle physical and emotional challenges in life, by providing an opportunity to learn social skills like listening, following directions from adults, taking turns and respecting others. It is not uncommon for children to worry about climbing high, being upside down or flipping. Gymnastics instruction can open them to their surprising physical abilities, giving them more confidence and comfort to try new things.

Motor Skills, Coordination, and Balance

A young gymnast will learn how to use different parts of their bodies in different ways, and gymnastics helps build a range of motor and coordination skills, and assists in developing a sense of body awareness, control and coordination, which can be beneficial to other physical activities and in everyday life.

Strength

Gymnastics conditions the body through specific movements and positions, using the body’s own weight to build flexibility, agility, and strength in the upper body, lower body, and core. Though primarily an anaerobic sport, we ensure well-rounded training, including cardiovascular endurance, are being addressed.

Commitment & Discipline

The challenging nature of gymnastics requires commitment and concentration. The structure of our classes helps teach kids how hard work and dedication pays off. Positive experiences in gymnastics can build confidence through achievement and overcoming challenges—learning how to both celebrate success—and experience failure—with grace.

Accomplishing Goals by Putting in the Work

Our instructors will teach your child how to achieve a goal by taking small steps through a progression of skills. This tiered approach helps break challenges into manageable increments, fostering confidence, perseverance and determination to succeed. Our Strength, Skill and Character focus promotes lifelong personal grit, adaptability and endurance both physically and emotionally.

Our Philosophy

We believe a supportive staff, a safe environment and careful progression is the key to successful gymnastics and children. Many of us on staff can personally attest to the physical and mental toughness we learned as gymnasts helping us in our adult life—and we’re happy and honored to be a part of that journey with our gymnasts today. No matter how long they stay or how far they go, we hope they retain a little piece of what gymnastics taught them throughout their lives!

Partnership with Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA)

At Seattle Gymnastics Academy, we also place importance on an additional dimension: building character. The mindset to think about what happened, make a correction and try again. To further support this initiative, SGA has partnered with Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA), a national non-profit developing “Better Athletes, Better People” by working to provide all youth and high school athletes a positive, character-building sports experience. As a catalyst for a positive youth sports culture, Positive Coaching Alliance provides research-based training and resources for coaches, parents, athletes and leaders to ensure a positive youth development experience for ALL kids, in all communities across the U.S., through sports.
