You may remember when we launched our Sensory Integration program at Lake City in January 2020, a specially adapted gymnastics class for a range of sensory, cognitive, social, emotional and physical impairments. Prior to the pandemic, this class was thriving, and integral to the kids and their families that attended. Now, a year since we had to close the program due to the pandemic, Coach Kayla is so excited to bring it back is a safe and meaningful way!
Sensory Integration is offered on Wednesdays at 1:30pm, and will follow all our same health & safety protocols. Led by Coach Kayla, with the support of the participant’s parent/guardian or aide, this unique 45-minute class is designed for kids ages 6-10 years with diverse sensory, attention, and social needs to learn progressive gymnastics. Possible disabilities include, but are not limited to: ADHD, autism, Asperger’s, Down Syndrome, developmental delays, or any child that may find classes on our busy days a bit too overwhelming – especially as a first introduction to gymnastics.
Coach Kayla is a passionate, perfect fit to lead this class; she received her B.S. Social Science degree from Portland State University, with a double minor in Special Education and Secondary Education, and also has three years’ experience working with kids of all ages and a range of exceptionalities in an educational setting. Coupled with her experience at SGA and passion for the benefits of gymnastics, she carefully designed this class for kids who need environmental changes in the gym to participate and succeed; taking place when we have no or limited other classes running, reducing the level of noise and distractions. Lights and music will be kept softer and the gym equipment arranged for optimal accessibility, empowering kids to build strength, develop skills, and have fun in a space made for them! “Here at SGA, we believe everyone can learn gymnastics, and I am proud to be part of the process to make that a reality for our gymnasts with disabilities. There are also a ton of physical, cognitive, emotional and social benefits for all children to gain from gymnastics, and that is especially true for kids with disabilities,” says Coach Kayla.
While we always advocate for and encourage fully-inclusive classes in all of our programs, we also understand typical classes during our busy days may be overwhelming for some with sensory sensitivities. “We want to have a class option for everyone to come in just as they are!” says Coach Kayla. “But our hope is that some participants in this class may later be excited to join inclusive Learn classes.”
Participants can expect to jump, swing, flip, stretch, and run while we learn the foundations of gymnastics. We will be working on all of equipment in our gym on a rotating basis, including the beam, bars, trampolines and more. “I am very much about the approach of listening to what students and their families have to say about their needs in class, and very open to making this a collaborative process if it contributes to our principles of inclusion, safety, and progressive gymnastics,” says Coach Kayla.
